Jordan Road Trip: The Ultimate 9-Day Itinerary (+ What We Skipped So You Don't Have To)

Jordan is a country that'll mess with your sense of time. You'll float in the Dead Sea—the lowest point on Earth. Walk through a 2,000-year-old city carved into rose-red cliffs. Sleep under a billion stars in the Valley of the Moon. Watch actors on horseback reenact the Arab Revolt on a vintage steam train.

Ancient civilizations, rift valleys, endless deserts, warm hospitality—this country packs more into its borders than seems physically possible.

And the best way to experience it? A road trip.

Rent a car and drive yourself, or hire a driver for the duration. Either way, you're in for a timeless adventure.

OUR 9-DAY JORDAN ROAD TRIP

This is what WE actually did—the real route, the real timing, the honest reflections. We prioritized diving in Aqaba (added 2 extra days there) which meant skipping Madaba, the desert castles, and the Arab Revolt experience.

Would I do it differently? Maybe. Would I regret the diving? Absolutely not. Per my personality, I think too much desert and history could have been overwhelming.

Here's our the Polar Steps Map of what we actually followed.

This itinerary is fully customizable. Shorten it, extend it, swap days around based on your priorities. We built ours around diving in Aqaba and hitting the main historical sites. You can build yours around hiking, photography, cultural immersion—whatever calls to you.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

Day 0: Arrive Amman

Day 1: Amman → Jerash → Ajloun → Amman

Day 2: Amman → Wadi Mujib → Petra

Day 3: Petra (full day)

Day 4: Petra → Wadi Rum

Day 5-7: Wadi Rum → Aqaba (diving + beach)

Day 8: Aqaba → Dead Sea → Amman → Departure

Total driving: ~600km over 9 days

Why this route works: Logical loop, no backtracking, natural flow south then back north

DAY 0: ARRIVAL IN AMMAN

12:00 PM - Airport arrival

14:00 - Check-in at The Sydney Hotel Amman

WHERE WE STAYED - The Sydney Hotel Amman

The Sydney Hotel is an ideal choice. Conveniently located just a few minutes' walk from bustling downtown and the renowned Rainbow Street.

The building dates back to 1964 and has been completely renovated. One standout feature: the expansive lobby and backyard with beautiful graffiti on the walls—perfect for mingling with fellow travelers and swapping stories.

Hotel with hostel vibes (great for solo travelers and couples alike)

They offer

  • Breakfast

  • Self Laundry

  • Wi-Fi

Cost: ~30-40 JD per night for a private room

AFTERNOON: Downtown Amman Self-Guided Walking Tour

15:00 onwards - Self-guided walking tour

Must-do:

  • Wander the souqs

  • Visit the Roman Amphitheater (if open)

  • Try local food at Abuzaghleh Restaurant (We loved the food here!)

  • Try the kunafa from Habibi with cardamom coffee!

💡 TIP: Do some shopping for souvenirs NOW. Amman's prices are cheaper than other cities. Stock up on authentic spices—you'll thank me later.

DAY 1: AMMAN → JERASH → AJLOUN → AMMAN

09:00 - Leave hotel after breakfast

STOP 1: AJLOUN CASTLE (9:00-10:30)

Drive: 1 hour from Amman

Time needed: 1-1.5 hours

Entry: Included in Jordan Pass

This 12th-century fortress sits high above the Jordan Valley with panoramic views that make you understand EXACTLY why it was built here. The Islamic architecture—thick stone walls, strategic towers—is impressive.

We took our time exploring, reading plaques, taking photos. Still finished in about an hour.

Don't miss: The local tea shop just outside serves traditional Jordanian coffee flavored with cardamom. Unusual, interesting, delicious. We stayed for 30 minutes just chatting with the owner.

STOP 2: JERASH - THE ROMAN RUINS

Drive: 40 minutes from Ajloun (downhill, scenic)

Time needed: 2-2.5 hours

Entry: Included in Jordan Pass

Best time: Morning or late afternoon (avoid midday heat, although we were there right at noon)

Jerash is often called the "Pompeii of the East"—and honestly, that's accurate. Grand ceremonial gates, majestic colonnaded streets, captivating temples, jaw-dropping theaters.

The Roman Theatre's acoustics are INSANE. Stand in the center, speak normally, and people in the top rows hear you perfectly. Engineering genius from 2,000 years ago.

It was hot and sunny when we visited, but so beautiful we couldn't miss anything. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. You'll need them.

Read our complete guide: Ajloun & Jerash Day Trip

LUNCH OPTIONS IN JERASH

Our tour guide provided these options. We decided to head back to Amman downtown for a late lunch instead, but these are solid if you're hungry:

💰💰💰 Menu Selection:

  • Um Khalil Restaurant (per order)

💰💰 Open Buffet:

  • Green Valley Restaurant (Wadi Al Akhdar) - 12 JD per person

💰 Quick Bite:

  • Kebab Sandwich - 3 JD per sandwich

  • Falafel Sandwich - 0.5 JD per sandwich

(Meals are self-paid)

16:00-17:00 - Return to Amman

Evening - Late Lunch at Downtown, Rainbow Street for dinner, rest up

DAY 2: THE DRIVE SOUTH TO PETRA

07:50 - Check out

09:00 - Leave for Wadi Mujib

THE DEAD SEA VIEW

As you drive south, the Dead Sea appears on your right. The landscape shifts dramatically—mountains, valleys, this sense that you're descending into something ancient.

STOP 1 :WADI MUJIB - JORDAN'S GRAND CANYON

Drive: ~2 hours from Amman

Time needed: 2-2.5 hours

Entry: NOT included in Jordan Pass (~20-25 JD)

Wadi Mujib is a spectacular canyon—the lowest gorge on Earth. The Siq Trail takes you through narrow passages with water flowing at different currents and depths.

What to bring/rent:

  • Wet shoes (rent at center or bring your own)

  • Life vest (provided with entry)

  • Waterproof bag (for your phone)

  • Sense of adventure

The experience: You're wading through water—sometimes waist-deep—between towering sandstone cliffs. The hike up gives you an adrenaline rush that you cant imagine. It ends at a waterfall. On your way back down you can just mostly float all the way! The contrast is perfect. This is one of those hikes i will always remember and want to do again if I went again!

💡 TIP: Start early to avoid crowds and midday heat. The canyon provides shade, but entry/exit points are exposed.

LUNCH & THE ROAD TO PETRA

Grab a quick lunch near Wadi Mujib or pack snacks (this is a better option since there are very limited options).

Then head south to Petra. The drive is breathtaking—endless deserts with nothing but sand, then suddenly rock and boulder formations appear out of nowhere.

Reflection moment: Unbelievable how people in the Petra age actually traversed these deserts on camels with limited food, water, no shade, no GPS. It may have taken days or weeks to find their destination. Our air-conditioned car with a full tank feels like cheating.

STOP 2 : PETRA

WHERE WE STAYED: SEVEN WONDERS LUXURY CAMP

15:00 - Check-in

Distance to Petra: 8km

We booked the bubble tent for the sheer experience—and it was WORTH IT. Transparent ceiling, lying in bed looking up at the Milky Way. Surreal.

What's included: Dinner, breakfast, private bathroom, A/C

Cost: ~80-120 JD per night depending on tent type

Evening: Watch sunset from your dome. We arranged a campfire night with local music and food through our host. One of the highlights of the trip.

DAY 3: PETRA - THE LOST CITY

07:50 - Check out, breakfast

08:30 - Head to Little Petra first

STOP 1: LITTLE PETRA

Time needed: 1 hour

Entry: Free

You can skip Little Petra and go straight to main Petra. We didn't—and we're glad.

Little Petra has different hues than main Petra—golds, browns, creams instead of rose-red. It's beautiful in its own right and almost empty of tourists.

STOP 2: MAIN PETRA - THE FULL DAY

10:00-17:00 - Petra exploration

Entry: Included in Jordan Pass

We did the Little Petra → Monastery Trail → Main Petra circuit. It's intense but INCREDIBLE.

QUICK FACTS

Distance: 12-15km if you do the full route

Time: 6-8 hours depending on pace

Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Challenging

What to bring: 3+ liters water, good shoes, snacks, sun protection

THE ROUTE OPTIONS:

Route 1: The Siq Trail (Classic)

  • 1.2km walk through narrow canyon

  • Treasury reveal (THE iconic moment)

  • Continue through Street of Facades, Theatre, Royal Tombs

  • 6-8km one way if you walk the full trail

Route 2: The Monastery Trail

 (What we did)

  • 800+ rock-cut steps up the mountain

  • The Monastery (larger than Treasury!)

  • Descend to Basin area

  • Walk through main Petra to Treasury

  • Exit through the Siq

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Don't be the tourist who only sees the Treasury and leaves. The Treasury is just the BEGINNING. Keep going. The Monastery, the Royal Tombs, the Theatre—that's where the magic really is.

What you need:

  • Good walking shoes (you'll do 10-15km)

  • 3+ liters of water per person

  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)

  • Snacks (food inside is expensive)

  • Camera (obviously)

Read our complete Petra guide: Petra: Unveiling the Mysteries

EVENING: CHECK INTO LA MAISON HOTEL

Check-in: 14:00 (we checked in at 17:30 after Petra)

Location: Wadi Musa, meters from Petra entrance

This modern hotel offers the perfect location in Wadi Musa, just meters from the entrance to Petra. It has the Sahteen Restaurant, rooftop bar with scenic views, WiFi, all the amenities after a long day of walking.

Evening:  The long walk was tiring. But we freshen up and decided to try the local hammam to rid us of it. We then had a good dinner in the in house restaurant and collapsed in bed.

DAY 4: PETRA TO WADI RUM

12:00 - Check out (slow morning after yesterday's marathon)

We actually checked out around 12:00 because we celebrated the birthday of a friend we'd made during the Petra trek. Travel friendships hit different.

Drive time: 2 hours to Wadi Rum

💡 TIP: Grab snacks for the road. You won't find food until Wadi Rum. We stocked up on chips, nachos, juice—junk food never tasted so good.

CHECK INTO HASAN ZWAIDEH CAMP

15:00 - Arrive and check in

Authentic Bedouin camp owned by the Zawaideh Family (one of Wadi Rum's tribal families). Dome bubbles, panoramic tents, all with A/C and private bathrooms. Since we had already experienced the bubble, we took the tent.

Our experience: The snacks didn't help—we arrived starving after lunch service ended. We asked for something, and they brought pita bread, hummus, cut veggies, and cardamom coffee. Jordanian hospitality is real.

NEXT STOP : WADI RUM - VALLEY OF THE MOON

Wadi Rum Protected Area is a spectacularly scenic desert valley—"Valley of the Moon"—inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

CAMEL TOUR

16:00-17:00 - 1-hour camel ride

Cost: Usually included in camp packages or paid separately

We did the camel tour in the evening instead of morning to avoid the rush. Most tourists go early. We went late and got the whole desert to ourselves, the sun and the real desert nomad experience!

The experience: Go back in time, feel how Bedouins traveled across deserts. An exciting ride where you'll learn traditional ways and take memorable photos.

Don't you just love those 🐫🐫?

SUNSET JEEP TOUR

17:00-19:00 - Desert exploration

After the camel, hop into a jeep. Visit iconic rock formations, then watch sunset from a stunning viewpoint. There are two tours that you can choose from - short and long. We picked the short tour.

Real talk: I've seen sunsets from mountains, beaches, the middle of the ocean. This was different. The vastness of the desert, the colors, the silence—it hits differently.

DINNER & STARGAZING

Head back to camp, relax, enjoy dinner (all local cuisine) with local music and dance.

Stargazing experience: There's an option to do guided stargazing from the desert. This comes at an extra fee unless explicitly specified in your booking.

The vastness of the desert and the vastness of the sky made us realize how infinite the universe actually is. Heavy? Maybe. Magical? Absolutely.

DAY 5: WADI RUM FULL DAY (Optional, we skipped this)

Why take another day: Wadi Rum is massive with so much to explore.

What you could do:

  • Full-day jeep tour hitting more sites

  • Hiking trails through the desert

  • Visit Lawrence's Spring

  • Climb sand dunes

  • Hot air balloon ride (if available)

  • The Arab Revolt Experience.

ARAB REVOLT EXPERIENCE - "JOURNEY THROUGH 1916"

Time needed: Half day

Location: Wadi Rum area

NOT included in Jordan Pass

THE EXPERIENCE:

Board an authentic Hijaz Railway steam train and travel back to 1916. Watch actors on horseback and camels ambush the train, simulating attacks by Arab fighters against

Ottoman soldiers during the Great Arab Revolt.

What happens:

  • Board vintage steam train in Wadi Rum

  • Dramatic reenactment of Arab Revolt battles

  • Horsemen and camel riders "attack" the train

  • After the "battle," enjoy Bedouin hospitality and traditional dining

  • Optional activities: buggy rides, paintball, horseback riding

Historical context: The Great Arab Revolt was a significant moment in Jordanian history, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. This immersive experience brings that history to life.

Provider: Jordan Heritage Revival Company (JHRC)

Cost: Check their website for current pricing

Booking: Advance reservation recommended (there may be special days of the week that the revolt is enacted).

Why we skipped: We were short of time and we needed 3 days in Aqaba for our diving course.

Why you might not want to: It's a unique blend of history, adventure, and culture you won't find anywhere else

You can keep it a slow day, or a one filled with adventure, or just history.

DAY 6-8: AQABA - THE RED SEA

10:30 - Check out from Wadi Rum (late checkout, no regrets)

Drive time: 1.5 hours

WHY WE SPENT 3 DAYS IN AQABA

We want to take a diving course in the red sea. Aqaba's Red Sea diving is world-class—vibrant coral reefs, incredible marine life, crystal-clear water.

This meant we skipped Madaba, the desert castles, and the Arab Revolt experience. Trade-offs.

LUNCH IN AQABA DOWNTOWN

We stopped downtown for lunch and grabbed dry fruits and snacks. We were staying near dive centers (outskirts), food options are limited. Downtown has everything.

CHECK IN ALMARSA VILLAGE RESORT

Check-in: 13:00

Location: South Beach, Aqaba

Resort with pools, diving center, beach access. Perfect for a diving base. Less ideal if you just want sightseeing—in that case, stay downtown.

Aqaba sits at the tip of Jordan on the Red Sea. From certain points, you can see three countries—Jordan, Israel, Egypt. At night, you might spot four (add Saudi Arabia).

Israel is unbelievably close—almost like neighbors sharing a backyard. You'd think you could swim there... but nah-nah, you wouldn't want to try that!

Geopolitical reality check: Iran attacked Israel during our stay. Our hearts skipped a beat at the thought of war brewing while we were there. It was our first day. The proximity to such complex geopolitics is sobering.

DIVING IN AQABA

Our setup: 3-day Open Water certification course

If you're diving:

  • 3 days: Okay for certification

  • 4 days: Better—time to dive multiple sites

If you're NOT diving:

  • 1-2 days: Enough for snorkeling, beach activities, sightseeing

Dive sites: Japanese Garden, Cedar Pride wreck, Eel Garden, many more

Water temperature: Warm year-round

Visibility: 20-30 meters typically

WHAT ELSE TO DO IN AQABA

  • Snorkeling (don't need certification)

  • Glass-bottom boat tours

  • Beach activities

  • Visit Aqaba Fort

  • Corniche walk at sunset

  • Local seafood restaurants

DAY 9: AQABA → DEAD SEA → AMMAN

10:00 - Check out

We had breakfast at a downtown cafe instead of the resort—better food, better vibe.

NEXT STOP : DEAD SEA

Drive time: 2.5 hours from Aqaba

Float at the lowest point on Earth—430 meters below sea level. Experience weightlessness. Slather on Dead Sea mud. Let those minerals work their magic.

Where to go: Since there are no well-equipped public beaches, visit one of the resorts offering:

  • Natural mud station

  • Showers and changing rooms

  • Pools

  • Food and beverages

How long: 2-3 hours is plenty

Entry: ~20-30 JD at resort day passes

⚠️ WARNING: The salt BURNS any cuts or nicks. Beware if you just shaved a day ago or cut/bruised yourself recently.

RETURN TO AMMAN

Evening:

  • Amman Citadel

  • Last-minute souvenir shopping

  • Walk downtown

  • Try Kunafa if you haven't yet

  • Reflect on the journey

SYDNEY HOTEL (One Last Night)

Check back in, pack, prepare for departure tomorrow.

DAY 10: DEPARTURE

Morning:

  • Early wake-up

  • Visit Amman Citadel or Roman Theatre if time allows

  • Final packing

  • Airport transfer

End of journey. But trust me, Jordan stays with you.

WHAT WE SKIPPED (And Whether You Should Too)

We prioritized diving in Aqaba. That meant skipping some incredible experiences. Should YOU skip them? Depends on your priorities.

MADABA - THE ANCIENT CITY OF MOSAICS

Time needed: Half day

Entry: Included in Jordan Pass

Madaba is renowned for intricate Byzantine mosaics, especially the famous 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in St. George's Church. Several other churches showcase stunning mosaic collections.

Why we skipped: Diving took priority, and we were exhausted after Petra

Why you might not want to: If you love history and art, this is unmissable

How to add it: Stop on Day 2 (between Amman and Wadi Mujib) or on Day 9 (returning from Dead Sea)

DESERT CASTLES - MEDIEVAL FORTRESSES

Time needed: Full day for the loop

Entry: Most included in Jordan Pass

The castles:

  • Qasr Al-Azraq: Circular fort, Umayyad dynasty

  • Qasr Amra: UNESCO site with preserved frescoes and mosaics

  • Qasr Al-Hallabat: Large courtyard, mosque, hammam

  • Qasr Tuba: Smaller circular castle

Why you might not want to: Unique architecture, remote desert adventure

How to add it: Dedicate Day 1 to desert castles instead of Jerash/Ajloun, OR add a Day 10 before departure

OTHER OPTIONS WE DIDN'T COVER

Dana Biosphere Reserve (1-2 days)

  • Jordan's largest nature reserve

  • Hiking trails through varied ecosystems

  • Eco-lodges with stunning views

Ma'in Hot Springs (Half day)

  • Natural hot springs near Dead Sea

  • Spa experience

  • Waterfalls and pools

Umm Qais (Half day)

  • Ancient Greco-Roman city

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR YOUR JORDAN ROAD TRIP

RENTING A CAR VS HIRING A DRIVER

Self-Drive

  • Need: International Driving Permit

  • Cost: ~30-50 JD per day + insurance

  • Pros: Complete flexibility

  • Cons: Navigation stress, aggressive city drivers

Hire a Driver

  • Cost: ~80-100 JD per day

  • Pros: Local knowledge, stories, stress-free, photo spot tips

  • Cons: More expensive, less spontaneity

Our choice: We hired drivers for most segments. They added SO much value—stories about culture, restaurant recommendations, hidden viewpoints. Totally worth it.

MONEY MATTERS

Currency: Jordanian Dinar (JD)

Exchange rate: 1 JD ≈ $1.40 USD (Approx)

Where to exchange:

  • Downtown Amman money changers (best rates)

  • NOT at airport (worst rates)

ATMs: Widely available in cities

Credit cards: Accepted in hotels/restaurants, not in markets

💡 TIP: Carry cash. Lots of it. Most transactions are cash-only.

BEST TIME TO VISIT JORDAN

Spring (March-May)

  • Perfect weather (15-25°C / 59-77°F)

  • Wildflowers blooming

  • Peak season = higher prices

Fall (September-November) - OUR CHOICE

  • Ideal temps (20-30°C / 68-86°F)

  • Fewer crowds than spring

  • Perfect for everything

Summer (June-August)

  • HOT (30-40°C / 86-104°F)

  • Brutal in Petra and Wadi Rum

Winter (December-February)

  • Cool (10-18°C / 50-64°F)

  • Very few tourists

  • Cold nights in desert

Our recommendation: April-May or September-October

STAYING HYDRATED

Jordan is HOT and DRY. Drink more water than you think you need.

Water strategy:

  • Buy large bottles at supermarkets (cheaper)

  • Refill reusable bottles

  • Drink before you feel thirsty

Don't let dehydration ruin your trip.

RESPECT LOCAL CUSTOMS

Dress modestly:

  • Cover shoulders and knees

  • Bring scarf for religious sites

  • Swimwear only at pools/beaches

Photography:

  • Always ask before photographing people

  • Especially women

  • No military installations

General behavior:

  • Minimal public displays of affection

  • Remove shoes when entering homes

  • Accept tea offers (it's hospitality)

JORDANIAN HOSPITALITY

Jordanians are known for warm, welcoming hospitality. Embrace it.

Our experience: Everyone we met had stories about the places we visited, the food, the

culture. These interactions were trip highlights. Don't rush past them.

❌ 5 MISTAKES TO AVOID

1. Not buying Jordan Pass before arrival└─ Saves money AND time at immigration

2. Only getting 1-day Petra pass└─ We made this mistake. Get 2 days minimum.

3. Underestimating distances and drive times└─ Jordan looks small. The drives are longer than they appear.

4. Skipping Wadi Mujib to save money└─ Not included in Jordan Pass, but 100% worth the extra cost.

5. Not staying hydrated└─ Dehydration ruins trips. Drink water constantly.
